#LFF2023: “All Of Us Strangers” Essay

EXT. A NEAR-EMPTY TOWERBLOCK IN LONDON

The dark blue sky aches as much as the tears shed by the angels. A silhouette appears next to the flickering evening light as the horizon begins to burn. Melancholic music sets in while the skyline of the metropolis burns itself into the memory as much as Adam’s sadness itself. He sits alone in front of his script, inwardly screaming, his facial expressions rigid – nothing glows behind his large fawn eyes.

This is where it starts. An emergency alarm. A siren. And then an elevator. The young man nods at him mischievously, flirts, tries to impress Adam. But he can’t get involved with a glass of whiskey. Not here, not now. He can’t drink away his sorrows. Not when he’s still grieving. This emptiness has been with him for far too long, and he’s stopped caring about himself. But Harry keeps showing up. And so the stranger from the 6th floor becomes a lover. Silently and secretly, kiss on kiss, skin on skin. And their steady breaths as they lie side by side finally bring peace and push the loneliness aside.

But there are still the pieces of Adam’s past that won’t let him go. Photos that haunt him. And so begins his journey back, familiar and yet as if from another life. Before he was always watching and observing, now the silence and the rush of the trains, brings him to the thing he thought he had lost forever. And he finds two souls that he always tried to save, but who are now those who heal him. But there is nothing good in this world without darkness as well.

And then there is Harry, in the moment and at the same time fading. Harry, in whom also burns a fire, whose soul purifies and whose love is the goal. Dreams are like angels, they keep evil at bay, love is the light that drives out the darkness. And Adam knows that he will protect Harry from the cloaked claw and keep the vampires away from his front door. There on the 6th floor, where Harry drank the whiskey before he could ask himself one question:

Are we just ghosts entwined in the red light or are all of us strangers? ✨
